Safety Not Guaranteed (3.5 stars)

A team of journalists are dispatched to find out who’s behind a classified advertisement seeking a companion for time travel, with payment on return. After tracking down their oddball prey, the team has to decide how best to approach their subject.

CRAIG: (3.5) “Safety Not Guaranteed is a lot of fun, largely because of its likable cast including Mark Duplass, Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell, among others. It is a movie I have no problem watching over and over again.”

PHIL: (3.5) I love everyone in this movie. I saw it in the theatres and still suggested watching it again for the show. Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass have good chemistry that make this worth looking into.

Here’s the show description: When the mangled corpse of a local teenager is discovered, rumor and suspicion spread like a plague through Hemlock Grove. As dark secrets bubble to the surface, everyone becomes a suspect in the hunt for a monster that may be hiding in plain sight.

We have very different opinions on the success of this show. Phil loves it. Craig hates it. You decide who has the best argument. Bon voyage.

Submarine (4 stars)

In this captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge, 15-year-old Oliver Tate has two big ambitions: to save his parents’ marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday.

CRAIG: (4) “It treads on familiar themes of teenage anxiety, but somehow manages to be fresh and charming.”

PHIL: (4)  I loved the look and sound of this movie, through and through. It is funny, charming, engaging, and is one of a few movies with heavy voice overs where you aren’t totally sick of the guy by the end.

Me and You and Everyone We Know (3.75 stars)

Eccentric Christine seeks emotional connections in the modern world while newly single shoe salesman Richard copes with his recent separation and his teenage son experiences a sexual awakening.

CRAIG: (3.5) “It takes place in some indie movie fantasy land full of indie characters and plots, and I dig it. I dig it real hard. Some might not, but I did.”

PHIL: (4) “I kind of love this examination of interpersonal relationships, budding and ending. It is cute, but not in an annoying way. I’d highly recommend for those into solid indie flicks.”

Compliance (2.75 stars)

Based on a true incident, this tense drama unfolds as a prank caller pretends to be a cop and convinces a restaurant manager to interrogate her teenaged employee about a supposed theft from a customer — a situation that soon spins out of control.

CRAIG: (2.5) “An adequately rendered movie, based on a stirring concept. Unfortunately, there is very little worth sticking around for after the uniqueness of the concept wears off.”

PHIL: (3) Perfectly fine for about 2/3 of the film, Compliance is a sort of prisoner of its own premise. Eventually, the tension breaks out of monotony and you are left counting the minutes until the movie is over.

Blue Valentine (3.5 stars)

Once crazy about each other, Cindy and Dean have now grown apart. Cindy is disenchanted while Dean languishes in the emotional emptyness of their life in rural Pennsylvania. As they muddle through their marriage, they hearken back to the golden days.

CRAIG: (3.5) “This is the best movie that you will never want to watch again.”

PHIL: (3.5) The chronology is the the only thing that mars this incredibly pretty and impossibly sad look at a relationship set to self destruct.)
